Stress Reduction & Pain Relief
Stress is the root cause of all disease. Yoga not only reduces stress and its’ harmful effects but can also lessen the regularity of common stress-related conditions such as headaches, sleep & digestive issues, fatigue, pain, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart problems, anxiety, depression and much more.
Consistent practice can also reduce the symptoms of major chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer. If these conditions are already present, it can support the body’s natural immune response & bring about peace of mind.
The key is to find the kind for you and remember that the body changes from day to day as does the practice to accommodate this change. In addition, simple techniques like breath awareness & certain yoga postures literally harmonize the nervous system and our “fight or flight” response & stimulate the relaxation response in which the body truly has a chance to renew and to deeply heal from the inside out. Some of the classes we recommend for those with physical limitation include Gentle Yoga, Zen Hatha & Relax & Restore (click here for more information) as well as our private sessions tailored specifically for your needs. Also our new series called “Deepen Your Practice” was created to address how to create balance in body, mind and spirit & balance is a key to stress reduction & overall wellness. Improved Strength & Muscle Tone
Yoga harmoniously builds strength in all major muscle groups. The difference between yoga and other system of exercise when it comes to increasing physical strength is that, if instructed properly, yoga works the whole body proportionally, allowing for muscles that have been worked to elongate and release while working opposite muscle group. Simple sequence of Sun Salutations is designed to move and strengthen all major muscle groups. But yoga does not end with Sun Salutations, each group of asanas (yoga poses) aims to strengthen or stretch specific muscle groups and even different muscle fibers in one muscle group. Another great thing about yoga is that even student with different abilities and levels of fitness can benefit and enjoy the same class due to numerous ways of asana modification.
In addition, yoga can greatly affect core strength & postural awareness thereby supporting the entire structure of the body & decreasing injuries & pain. Many of our weekly classes are specifically targeted at building strength including: Slow Flow, Vinyasa Flow, Sweat & Flow. Click here to sign up.
Enhanced Flexibility & Mobility
Improved Flexibility & Mobility: As we age & due to the effects of gravity and stress, our muscles begin to shorten and tighten & our joints can become painful & weak. By combining conscious movement with breath, yoga addresses these issues by lengthening not only the muscles but also the “fascia” or connective tissue.
By combining circular movements as well as flexion, extension and rotation, the body has a change to move through a variety of planes which creates more symmetry & stability as well as increased range of motion. Yoga is also an excellent complement to other activities like running, walking, cycling and other aerobic-type exercise. In its’ own unique way, it builds endurance and decreases the risk of injury as well as aiding in the recovery from injury. It is also excellent for those with pain conditions that affect the joints such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis, and even osteoporosis due to its’ weight-bearing yet therapeutic movements. Yoga can even be done in a chair or modified for use at home on the bed if getting up and down from the floor is difficult.

Improved Emotional Balance & Mental Clarity:
Both yoga and meditation practices can greatly affect the mind on a many different levels. Many people find themselves plagued with excessive worry and fear, difficulty making decisions, irritability, lethargy, depression and even panic attacks, nausea and shortness of breath. This can take a toll on our bodies and lead to a decrease in overall well-being if the cycle is not intercepted. Yoga and meditation can cultivate a deeper awareness of the constant chatter in the mind as well as excessive muscle tension and can, therefore, lead to a more balanced mental state over time. One of the keys to increase the feel good hormones or “endorphins” as well as oxytocin and prolactin, is conscious and systematic breathing techniques.
Many restorative yoga postures (using bolsters or props to support the body) can also contribute to improved emotional health as the body has a chance to replenish, restore and move from struggle into stillness. Other techniques, like mindfulness and yoga nidra, help to release subconscious tensions and beliefs in the body-mind that often cause unnecessary worry and stress.
For classes designed to improve emotional balance we recommend our Mindfulness & Meditation classes as well as Relax & Restore & Zen Hatha. Also, check out our Energy Healing sessions for another approach to emotional release and balance and calm. Yoga can also be a great tool to enhance memory and clarity of mind. Remember, in order to heal the body, you must start with healing the mind.
Improved Respiration & Cardiovascular Wellness
Much of the science of yoga resides in the focus of improving lung capacity and restoring health through the breath connected with the body.
There are a variety of ways that yoga can increase cardiovascular health including diaphragmatic breathing, postures that lengthen the body and specifically the torso to provide more space for the lungs and ribs to expand. Another aspect is that some classes move at a faster pace, and although still meditative and conscious, can increase heart rate and respiration and even produce a mild aerobic benefit. Some of those classes can include Vinyasa Yoga, Ashtanga Fusion and Slow Flow (CLICK HERE to register). Through enhanced blood flow, the organs and tissues are massaged and the body detoxifies and can receive fresh nutrients and prana or “life force” energy.
Also, our teachers can work individually with you in our private sessions (click here) in order to design a program that is right for you if improved cardiovascular wellness is one of your goals. Our Mindfulness & Meditation Practices classes as well as Relax & Restore class are another option when striving to improve overall breath capacity and increase longevity.
Enhanced Energy & Vitality
Due to the daily stresses of life, poor diet, extended time sitting, multi-tasking, sleep issues and more, we are more drained and depleted than ever before. Yoga can be an integral part of the body’s path back into balance and vibrant health. Through awareness of breath, body and mind, the practitioner learns over time where he or she is out of balance and what practices best assist them back into a state of harmony and vitality. When we have constant energy throughout the day and can sleep easily at night, our bodies naturally feel better and our lives improve over time. When we do not eat properly, hydrate or take time for conscious mind & body activities like yoga and meditation, the body has a hard time catching up and soon exhaustion sets in.
One of the offerings we have at Agni Studio is “Ayurvedic Lifestyle Coaching” with Tetyana Davis. This is an excellent way to begin cultivating more balance by getting to know our “doshas” or “unique mind-body personality” and using specific suggestions from Tetyana to impact your health for the better on a daily basis. All of our classes can also be a catalyst for more steady energy and making healthier choices both on and off the mat.
Greater Self-Confidence & Personal Power
Perhaps the most important potential benefit of consistent yoga practice is connecting to the True Self on a daily basis. By coming to the mat, taking time away from the busyness of life, expectations, pressure and the like, the practitioner has a chance to pause and go within.
One guru in the Satyananda tradition once said that “the greatest benefit of yoga is learning how to stand on your own two feet”. Through the power of the asana (physical postures), the breath (pranayama), meditation (dhyana) and the yogic principles, it process of getting to know the Self becomes clear. From that place of deep knowing, many old habits and patterns fall away and it is said that the yogi experiences a transformation of sorts. Once we know who we are and why we are here, self-esteem and confidence unfolds with ease and many insecurities, doubts, regrets & resentments fall away. The mat is a mirror of our hearts and deepest desires…it is on this “empty canvas” that we can paint the life of our dreams.
For a wonderful way to explore your heart’s deepest desires, please join our “Dharma Circle” with Tetyana Davis once a month. Also, attend our workshops & events to learn how to create optimal balance and inner power on and off the mat. CLICK HERE to register.
